Do Your Pilates Sample Exercises Everyday

Just what are Pilates sample exercises? These are what you “serve up” when you want to expose folks towhat a Pilates routine might be.

As part of an outreach program for local public schools, my training partner Leslee Ames (www.Dance-on.net) and I give weekly Pilates classes to 6th graders at Mitchell Elementary School in Charleston, SC. In March, 2010 we participated in a School Fitness evening. The routine was that groups visiting groups would rotate through seven different exercise rooms [Yoga, Pilates,
Strength Training, Aerobics, etc)  in which trainers would briefly take the visitors through a series of exercises.

LesLee and I agreed that we would simply take the visitors through the opening 5 exercises of the Pilates Mat routine. We had already been telling our students they should do these every day as a part of the their Pilates routine for the rest of their lives.

So, that was easy. But how can I explain to you what this Pilates routine is, and how it relates to the full Pilates exercise program?

First, a bit about Joseph Pilates who developed the program because as a child he was very sickly and wanted to improve his own health. He studied the exercise routine all the way back to how the original Olympians from Greece tainting. He adapted the best exercises from all these programs and put them together into what has become the Pilates mat program, the most challenging of which is the advanced series.

Common to all the Pilates routines from beginner to advanced are the opening 5 exercises — hence the Opening Five. You can view them in the following video:  http://Best-Fitness-Program.com/yoga-pilates.html.

Try these Pilates sample exercises yourself — and just add another exercise every so often — but do the opening 5 every day.
